I can't help much with the java issue (particularly with mac) but Tal has put together some help for Java issues: I'm not a mac user but have been able to install on a friend's mac recently with a newer version of R (3.0.1 I believe). But java can be an issue on any OS, though usually less of a pain. This was specific to my experience as a Windows user.
